The Illustration Process

Relief Lines, Riso Color

Each illustration starts with linework that I carve by hand as a woodcut or linocut. Once the carving is finished, I scan the image and draw the color digitally. The completed artwork is reproduced through full-color digital printing in the book, while the individual art prints are separated into layers and printed on a Risograph.

A Risograph is a bit like a cross between a screen print and a copy machine, printing one color at a time through separate ink drums and stencils. The slight shifts and imperfections in the process give each print a unique, vintage texture.
