This woodcut print features the original artwork I created for Dogfish Head’s 2026 Czech-Spresso can, a Czech-style dark lager brewed with coffee malt. The spring design is based on the Green Man, a leafy face found in old architecture and artwork that often represents rebirth and new growth. I built the face from coffee leaves and beans to tie the legend back to the beer.

The Woodcut Process

Each design began as a drawing that I transferred onto a woodblock and cleaned up with a Sharpie. I then darkened the block with ink so I could better see what I was carving away. Every line I cut becomes negative space, while the raised areas catch the ink and create the finished image. Think of it like a big stamp.

I printed the final editions on a Vandercook Universal III at my friend’s letterpress shop, The Arm, in Brooklyn.
