This woodcut print features the original artwork I created for Dogfish Head’s 2026 Covered in Nuggs can. For the winter design, I pulled inspiration from a few different folklore tales to create my own owl-like winter spirit, surrounded by twisting hop vines and flowers.

The Woodcut Process

Each design began as a drawing that I transferred onto a woodblock and cleaned up with a Sharpie. I then darkened the block with ink so I could better see what I was carving away. Every line I cut becomes negative space, while the raised areas catch the ink and create the finished image. Think of it like a big stamp.

I printed the final editions on a Vandercook Universal III at my friend’s letterpress shop, The Arm, in Brooklyn.
