Golden Retriever Print
For the 50 years between 1840 and 1890, Dudley Marjoribanks worked to breed an ideal gundog for use at his Guisachan estate in the Scottish Highlands. The original cross to create the first Golden Retriever was of a yellow-colored retriever named Nous, with a Tweed Water Spaniel female dog named Belle. One thing Marjoribanks looked for when breeding was for the dogs to have a mouth “soft” enough to pick up and hold game like ducks without damaging. The Golden’s mouth is so soft, it’s said they can carry a raw egg in their mouth without cracking the shell.
